New Jersey Hair Restoration
How a follicular unit hair transplant is performed by Dr. Sandhu and his staff at New Jersey Hair Transplant
Patients who are interested in hair restoration, first make an appointment and then have an initial consultation with Dr Sandhu. At the consultation, you and the Doctor will discuss your specific goals that you have and Dr Sandhu will explain what he can do for you on the day of your surgery. This involves a detailed breakdown of the zones where hair restoration will be performed and what to expect. He discuss your desired appearance and assess how many follicular hair units can be safely harvested from your donor site. During your consultation, Dr. Sandhu will answer any questions about your hair transplant and what to expect before, during & after surgery.
On the day of your hair transplant procedure
Your hair restoration surgery will be performed by Dr. Sandhu right here at his office in Paramus, NJ. It will take the full day to finish. Dress in comfortable clothes and have a full breakfast before coming to the office at the scheduled time. Start time is usually at 7:30 am with harvesting of your hair follicles taking place first. After a review of the plan for your hair restoration you will be given a mild sedative and made comfortable. The donor site will then be prepared for extraction and harvesting of the follicular units of hair. Extraction of your hair will continue until about 1:00 pm and then we will take a break and lunch will be provided.
After lunch, you will be made comfortable again and implanting of the harvested hair will begin. This will continue for the rest of the day until all of your many extracted hair follicles are implanted in the desired location on your head. When done, usually around 5:00 or 6:00 pm, your head will be dressed with a gauze bandage and instructions will be reviewed with you as to what to do and expect in the coming days when you go home.

The Hair Transplant Procedure
Step 1
The donor site is prepped with mild antiseptic solution and local anesthesia infiltrated into the scalp.
Step 2
The next step in your procedure is the extraction of the donor hair. This is the key step that distinguishes the follicular unit hair transplant procedure from the outdated strip hair transplant procedure. Unlike the strip which involves cutting a strip from the donor area out of which The graft will be harvested. The Fue transplant method involves extraction of each follicile individually from the donor area. There is no cutting, incision or stitches and no long linear scar. This result is a significantly shorter healing time and minimizes any discomfort.
Dr. Sandhu and his technicians harvest as many grafts as possible from your donor site. A technician then separates them by the the number of hair in each unit. The grafts are stored in a chilled preservative solution until we are ready for implantation.
Step 3
Now we are ready to prepare the recipient site, the area which will be receiving the new hair. This is the critical step in creating a natural appearing hairline. Dr. Sandhu uses single follicular hair units at the hairline so it looks completely natural. That is how we avoid getting the “pluggy” look common with the strip procedure. Behind These single hair follicles we place the twos and threes to give additional density. The strategic positioning of hair is the key factor in achieving a truly undetectable result of FUE hair transplant. After completion of the hair transplant which usually takes 8 to 10 hours the patient is wrapped in a bandage and given a hair cap to go home.
After Hair Restoration Care
The night of your hair transplant procedure
It is best to sleep upright in either a lounger or propped up on pillows in your bed. This minimizes any swelling that might occur.
Because of the excitement of the day, most patients find it helpful to take a sleeping pill which we provide that night.
What to do in the important 7 days following your surgery
It’s important to avoid exercise, swimming, saunas and steam rooms until the grafts are firmly established in their new location.
You will be instructed in how to wash you’re hair during this time. After 7 days you can return to your normal exercise routine. The donor site will be almost healed by that time. Many patients return to work by day 2 or 3 and so long as it does not involve strenuous activity, it is perfectly safe to do so.
What to expect in the 15 months following surgery
Immediately after surgery you will see and feel the hair attached to the deeply implanted hair follicle. Sometime between day 7 – 21 the hair will shed and leave nothing to be seen. You will look as if nothing had been done. Usually by 3 – 5 months the hair follicle has generated sufficient hair and begins to be visible and palpable above the scalp. By 6 months usually there is half a centimeter of growth visible. Since each follicle starts producing hair at different times of its cycle the full density of implanted hair will not yet be apparent. The final result is what you see at 12 – 15 months after you’re FUE hair transplant.
